Wireless Operators(Wops) workplace

My place of work at RAF Abu Sueir Egypt 1955/56

There was a shift system in place, the nights were usually quiet with not much ''traffic''. The day shift was the busiest, with a lot of signals from Cyprus and the UK.

I remember a signal being received on February 18th 1956 containing the news of the tragic loss of the Scottish Airways Avro York which had taken off that morning from Abu Sueir bound for the UK. The passengers were mainly RAF together with a few Army personnel returning home to the UK at the end of their service in Egypt. The A/C had landed at Luqa for refuelling, before taking off again after 40 mins. The plane appeared to be in trouble without gaining much height, before plunging into the ground . There were no survivors, and the fact that we had worked with several of the RAF lads made it all the more sad and personal.

Woody(SAC Wood),Yours truly(Scouse) and Paddy.

Woody was the team leader and a great mate,he came from Skipton in Yorkshire. Paddy was a tremendous character, there was never a dull moment when he was around!

Visit to the pyramid's at Gaza

This was a day trip to Cairo from Abu Sueir.I am holding onto the camel, not realising the ''owner'' would shortly be demanding ''plenty accas''for the use of his animal. You can see a few of the lads in the background off to visit the Sphinx. The day included a visit to a cinema(!),various historic sites including a visit to the Cairo museum. We ended the day in a night club, where one of the lads tried to grab the belly dancer. He was firmly removed off the dance floor and we were warned to ''look after him''.This we did before making our discreet exit!
